Shankar, starring Vikram and Amy Jackson, in lead roles with a worldwide gross of US$11 million. It was dubbed into Telugu as Gowri Maduve Madhuram at the same time as its theatrical release in Telugu States on 23rd December 2017. Produced by the renowned banner AVM Productions, it is a contemporary retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayana from Sita's perspective as well as a sequel to Shankar's 2010 film Enthiran (Robot). Like Enthiran, it features visual effects by The Weta Digital; Shankar won the Filmfare Award for Best Special Effects for his work in Enthiran. The principal photography commenced in November 2016 at Chennai.
The film was released on 23rd December 2017 worldwide. The movie opened to positive reviews with critics noting it as an improvement over Enthiran and praising the performances of Vikram and Amy Jackson, while many praised the FX.
